Every year on October 2 the country comes together to celebrate and remember the man who inspired the nation to fight colonial rule- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. When we learn about the father of the nation, we hear stories of his struggles for non-violence, equality and freedom. However, do we know who he was as a student?

Here are some facts you need to know about education pursued by Mahatma Gandhi:

Primary education:

Gandhi was born in Porbandar in 1869 and received primary education in the city. He was not a bright student and used to learn by writing with his finger in the dust. He was neither considered to be very gifted in the classroom nor in the playing field.

High school:

He moved to Rajkot at the age of 9 when his father took on the role of a counsellor to the ruler and later the diwan. Gandhi joined Alfred High School in the city at the age of 11 and even lost a year when he got married at the age of 13 and struggled through school due to his father’s ill health. He was noted to be good at English, fair in arithmetic, weak in geography, good in conduct and bad in handwriting. The school was later renamed to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi High School in his memory and was shut down in May 2017 after 164 years, to make way for a museum.

College:

In 1888, Mahatma Gandhi enrolled in Samaldas Arts College, which was one of the few degree granting institutions in the region at the time. The college also boasts of being the alma mater for Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Gandhi later dropped out of the course and returned to Porbandar.

Law:

After dropping out of college, Gandhi expressed his wish to pursue law. He promised his family that he would abstain from women, meat and alcohol and journeyed to England in order to study law at the University College London’s (UCL) Faculty of Law. He was “called to the bar” at the age of 22 and returned to India on news of his mother’s death.(indianexpress)

Muharram 2017: Restrictions In Srinagar For Second Day To Stop Processions

Restrictions continued in parts of the summer capital for the second consecutive day on Saturday as a preventive measure in view of the ninth day of Muharram.

Restrictions are in place in the jurisdiction of 13 police station areas of the city, Srinagar District Magistrate (deputy commissioner) Syed Abid Rashid Shah told PTI here.

While restrictions continued in eight police station areas of the city for the second day, the curbs were imposed in five more areas this morning to maintain law and order, the officer said.

The restrictions were in force in Karan Nagar, Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Shergari, Maisuma, Kothibagh, Kralkhud and Ram Munshi bagh police station areas yesterday.

The curbs under Section 144 of CrPc were imposed in the police station areas of Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, M R Gunj and Safakadal as well this morning.

The district magistrate said there were apprehensions of breach of peace and law and order problems as the Shia community is likely to organise processions on 9th Muharram today and 10th Muharram tomorrow.

As per inputs received, there is credible apprehension that certain miscreants may disturb the procession and create law and order problems which may result into breach of peace and public tranquility and may cause loss of life and property, he said.

Therefore, Shah said, in order to facilitate religious gatherings of the community smoothly as per the past practice and to maintain peace, the imposition of restrictions in terms of Section 144 CrPC has become imperative.

The traditional Muharram procession used to pass through these areas, but have been banned since the eruption of militancy in 1990 as authorities maintain that the religious gathering has been used for propagating separatist politics.

However, life elsewhere in the valley remained normal.(business-standard)

Tom Alter, Padma Shri Actor And Writer, Dies Aged 67

MUMBAI: Veteran film, television and theatre actor and Padma Shri Tom Alter has died aged 67. The renowned actor and one-time sports writer and author had been battling stage four skin cancer.
Alter acted in over 300 movies apart from numerous TV shows, most famously as the gangster Keshav Kalsi in the hit soap opera Junoon which ran for a record five years during the 1990s. In addition to acting, Alter also ventured into direction and was a sports journalist in the 80s and 90s. He was the first person to interview Sachin Tendulkar for TV when the cricketer was yet to debut for India. Alter has written three books, one non-fiction and two fiction, and in 2008 was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian government in recognition for his services to the field of arts and cinema.

A statement released on behalf of his family said: "It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time."

Born in the hill station of Mussoorie in 1950, Alter was a third-generation American in India who studied at Woodstock School in the Himalayas and then briefly at Yale University in the USA, before returning to India in the early 70s. In 1972, he was one of three men - the others being Benjamin Gilani and Phunsok Ladakhi - chosen from over 800 applicants across north India to be enrolled in at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where two years later he graduated with a gold medal diploma in acting.

Alter's first release was Ramanand Sagar's Charas in 1976, in which he played the role of superstar Dharmendra's boss, a CID official. Among his notable roles during the first decade of his acting career were Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977), Shyam Benega's Junoon (1979), Manoj Kumar's magnum opus Kranti (1981) and Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). Other notable directors he worked with during the 70s and 80s were V Shantaram, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Manmohan Desai, Subhash Ghai, Chetan Anand - who gave him his first break in the Dev Anand-starrer Saheb Bahadur - and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who gave him the pivotal role of the gangster Musa in the critically acclaimed hit Parinda.

In the 90s, Alter was seen in many films, prominent among them Mahesh Bhatt's Aashiqui, Junoon and Gumrah, Ketan Mehta's Sardar and Priyadarshan's Kala Pani. During this time, he also acted in regional cinema - Bengali, Assamese, Telegu, Tamil and Kumaoni films. Among his foreign films are Richard Attenborough's Gandhi and One Night with the King, in which he acted opposite his idol, the legendary Peter O'Toole.

On TV, Alter's leading work came in Junoon, Zabaan Sambhalke, Jugalbandi, Bharat EK Khoj, Ghutan, Shaktimaan, Captain Vyom, Mere Ghar Aana Zindagi and Yahaan Ke Hum Sikandar. Most recently, he was seen in a pivotal role in the ongoing serial Rishton Ka Chakravyuh on Star Plus. At the time of his death, Alter had approximately 16 unreleased films lined up as well as a web series by Eros Now titled Smoke.

Throughout his cinematic and television career, Alter remained busy with theatre, having co-founded Motley Productions with Naseeruddin Shah and Gilani in 1979. His prominent stage work includes the two-and-a-half-hour-long solo play in Urdu, 'Maulana', 'Babur ke Aulaad', 'Lal Qile ka Aakhri Mushaira', 'Ghalib ke Khat', 'Trisanga', 'Teesveen Shatabdi', Copenhagen' and the theatrical reproduction of William Dalrymple's 'City of Djinns'.

In early 2017, Alter enacted a festival of his various plays in Hindi, English, Hindustani and Urdu titled titled 'Jashn-e-Maazi: The Play of History' which featured 19 of his portrayals and adaptations of leading historical figures such as Maulana Azad, Mirza Ghalib, Manto, Saahir Ludhianvi, Rabindranath Tagore, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Alfred Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi.

He is survived by his wife Carol, son Jamie, and daughter Afshaan.(timesofindia)

Judwaa 2 Movie Review: Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline, Taapsee’s Perfect Ode To Salman Khan’s Judwaa

In Judwaa 2, Varun Dhawan plays the roles of Raja and Prem, like Salman Khan in Judwaa, but Taapsee and Jacqueline aren’t called Mala and Rupa like Karisma Kapoor and Rambha. Here’s our movie review.

Dua aur muah (kiss) me yaad rakhna.

Salman Khan’s Judwaa (1997) wasn’t a great film, but it has nostalgia attached to it. This is why most of us were keen on seeing how close Varun Dhawan gets to Salman Khan in Judwaa 2. He doesn’t disappoint. The film also entertains without making a demand on your mental faculties. However, your ability to watch it twice or not will depend on your appetite for slapstick.

A smuggler called Charles (Zakir Hussain) kidnaps one of the conjoined twins of the Malhotra family right after their birth. They grow up as Raja and Prem (both played by Varun Dhawan) who live in Mumbai and London respectively. They behave in a similar fashion whenever they’re in proximity, which means they’ll spank women and try to forcibly kiss them. A doctor in the film describes it as one in eight million cases, and actually pinches a kid to demonstrate his theory. As if we are looking for logic in such a film.

You know David Dhawan’s cinema. It mostly works on clichés, so nobody is surprised when a supposedly Christian character in the film says, “Hum god se tumhare liye prarthana karega.”

Later, a shirtless Prem gets ragged at a Britain college, because why not? There’s a reason why people sweat in gyms to get six-pack abs. You remember the background score ‘Wicked Sunny’ from Mujhse Shaadi Karogi? Here, it’s ‘Nanga Prem.’ Never mind.

Soon, the two heroines, Alishka (Jacqueline Fernandez) and Samara (Taapsee Pannu), join junior Dhawan and raise the temperature. By now, it’s all gloss and punchlines.

How?

Consider this:

Somebody asks Upasana Singh, Taapsee’s mother in the film, whether she knows music. She replies, “Sa re ga ma Amitabh Bachchan.”

Why? Because Pa! Get it?

Soon after this or maybe before, who cares, Upasana Singh looks happy when Prem brings an unconscious Samara to her house. She chirps, “Tumne aisa kya kiya jo ye behosh ho gayi!” Don’t roll your eyes just yet. This happens when Dhawan’s character kisses both mother and daughter because his twin is also doing the same somewhere nearby.

Ah, it’s so original.

From 1997 to 2017, what has not changed at all in this film is its inherent misogyny and racial jokes. They come at you one after another, without a pause.

But you laughed in Judwaa! Well, you may laugh this time as well. I never said it’s completely unfunny, and there are other gags that totally work.

Take a look at this conversation:

Raja: Afghanistan ka capital kya hai?
Alishka: Kabul (Read it in Jacqueline’s voice).
Raja: What?
Jacqueline: Kabul, Kabul.
Raja: Al habibi, aaloo bukhara main tumhara.

It happens with so much spontaneity and energy that you laugh. At least, I laughed.

bilkul nahi hai.” This doctor is played by Ali Asgar. You may laugh now. This is Judwaa 2’s strength. Director David Dhawan has cast right actors in right roles. That reminds me, the film also has Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav, Vivan Bhatena and Pawan Malhotra. Some solace there.

Coming back to the jokes, consider this:

Vivan Bhatena loses his memory just like that and Varun Dhawan says, “Iska memory card ud gaya hai.” To which, Rajpal Yadav adds, “Matlab Ghajini ho gaya hai.”


Or, this one:

Prem: I am his lookalike.
Pawan Malhotra: Tu wo lukhkha (useless) hai jo kisi bhi layak nahi hai.

But this scene takes the cake:

Some people mob Varun Dhawan in London. Varun punches one of them and that guy calls out for his friends, “Gayle, Pollard, Bravo come.”

They all arrive and suddenly start signing DJ Bravo’s song ‘Champion, champion.’

Trust me, it’s hilarious.

The onus is on Varun Dhawan to fill into Salman’s shoes and he does that. He appears to be enjoying the PJs. You may have objection to the content, but this is nothing other than what they promised in the trailers.

However, both Jacqueline and Taapsee have been reduced to mere glamour elements. Jacqueline dances on her own songs and Taapsee keeps jumping into the pool. But to their credit, they try their best to support Varun Dhawan in making a joke work.

Judwaa 2, like the original, isn’t a piece of art, in fact it’s mediocre, but it’s that one film which may lift your mood. At 149-minutes, this slapstick comedy has some really laugh-worthy moments.(hindustantimes)

Today's Google Doodle Honors Chemist Asima Chatterjee

Organic chemist Asima Chatterjee paved the way for Indian women in science and improved the odds of survival for patients with cancer, epilepsy, and malaria.

Born in 1917, when India was still a British colony, she grew up in a relatively comfortable middle-class family in Calcutta, where she was encouraged to pursue an education -- although it's unlikely that anyone expected her to pursue it as far as she did. Chatterjee completed a Masters degree in organic chemistry at the University of Calcutta in 1938, and six years later she became the first woman in India to earn a doctorate in science. Around that time, she founded the Department of Chemistry at Lady Brabourne College, a women's college affiliated with the University of Calcutta.

Throughout her long and prolific career, Chatterjee's research focused on chemical compounds produced by plants native to the Indian subcontinent. Her work on a group of chemical compounds from the Madagascar periwinkle plant, called vinca alkaloids, contributed to the development of drugs used in chemotherapy to slow the growth of some types of cancer by preventing cells from dividing. Other research led to an anti-convulsive drug called Ayush-56, which helped treat epilepsy, and several anti-malarial drugs. She published around 400 papers and several volumes on Indian medicinal plants and their chemistry.

Chatterjee died on November 22, 2006. Today marks her 100th birthday.(forbes)
